Aluminium sulphate

Aluminium sulphate is a common mordant used on protein fibres (silk and wool) and cellulose fibres (plant-based linen, cotton).  It makes colours clearer, more lightfast and washfast. It is an inexpensive and safe chemical to use. It has a great affinity for protein fibre to help bond and fix the dyes.  However, it’s not too good with cellulose fibre so tannin or aluminium acetate is used because of their high affinity for cellulose to help the bonding process.

Mordanting instructions

Use at 15% weight of fabric (WOF).
