Copper Sulphate – colour modifier and saddening agent

Copper Sulphate is used in natural dyeing to shift and deepen colour. It acts as a saddening agent, muting brightness and pushing tones towards greens, teals, greys and darker shades depending on the dye and fibre.

It is typically used in very small amounts after dyeing or in a separate modification bath. A little goes a long way, and results can vary significantly depending on the base dye.

Copper Sulphate can also be used in some mordanting systems to influence tone, particularly in combination with tannin.

Suitable for

Protein and cellulose fibres (use caution on protein fibres)

Why use it

  • Shifts colours towards green/teal/grey tones
  • Deepens and mutes bright dyes
  • Expands natural dye colour range

Usage guide (WOF)

0.2–1% WOF for colour modification; up to 4% WOF maximum (use lowest end for silk and wool)

Use with care

  • Use very low concentrations
  • Can weaken fibres if overused
  • Dispose of solutions responsibly due to toxicity by exhausting your dyebaths, diluting the residue with clean water and don’t put it down the storm water.

A powerful modifier for experienced dyers wanting controlled, muted colour shifts.
