Why do I need vinegar when microwaving silk dyes, but not when steaming?
Silk dyes are acid dyes, which means they need an acidic environment to permanently bond with silk fibres.
When steaming, the combination of moisture, gentle heat, and time allows the dye to fix naturally. The silk’s own slight acidity — along with the acid already present in the dye — is usually enough for strong, permanent colour.
When microwaving, the process is much faster and drier. Because the dye fixes in minutes rather than hours, there isn’t enough time for acidity to develop on its own. Adding vinegar creates the acidic environment immediately, ensuring the dye bonds properly to the silk.
Without added acid during microwaving, colours may appear dull, wash out, or fix unevenly — particularly blues, greens, and darker shades.
