New to Silk Painting?

Don’t worry — everyone starts somewhere!

If you’re just beginning your silk painting journey and not sure what you need, we’ve got you covered.

Here’s a simple guide to help you get started with confidence and creativity.

Your Silk Painting Starter Kit

1. A Silk Scarf

Start with Paj or Habutai — they’re smooth, lightweight, and perfect for beginners.

2. Erasable Marker

Use this to sketch your design directly onto the silk.

3. Gutta (Resist)

This creates outlines for your design so colours stay crisp and defined.

4. Applicator Bottle

For applying your gutta neatly and precisely.

5. Silk Dyes or Paints

Choose steam-fix silk dyes for brilliant colour, or Arasilk paints if you prefer an easier, iron-fix option.

6. Brushes

Soft brushes help you blend and flow your colours beautifully.

7. Frame or Hoop

You’ll need something to stretch your silk while you paint — an embroidery hoop works perfectly for small scarves or pieces.
